Double Dipsea

Beautiful trail challenge. Sunny day, super views. 13.7 miles from Stinson Beach to Mill Valley, on beautiful trails that go through the Golden Gate Recreation Area, California State Park lands and our National Park of Muir Woods  -- and then back again. Nearly 500 competitors.

My strategy for the Double Dipsea (in priority order) was simply:
  • Do not get injured (no downtime with Death Ride 3 weeks later).
  • Finish
  • OK run time
So I ran it conservatively, no injuries and happily finished #160 (#4 in age group). Tough run but being 'relaxed' made it a bit easier.

Alex Varner, fellow mate of the Pelican Inn Track Club, won the race without any age/gender handicap (i.e. 'scratch'), having to pass everyone on the trails ahead of him. Alex also broke the all-time course record in 1:36.38. Great run!

Roy Rivers, also Pelican Inn, 55, ran a steady though fast pace and took Second place. (Roy's also  a former Dipsea Race champion, and has in prior years also won the Double Dipsea and the Quadruple Dipsea.)

Events: 2 Down, 7 to Go
Next up is the California Death Ride, 129 miles and 15,000 feet elevation, climbing 5 mountain peaks. Will power alone just not enough. Hope to get in several more solid hill and distance rides prior. It could easily take 12 hours of biking for me to cross the finish line. Daunting. No guarantees.
